چکیده

We carry out a new analysis of the sample of MACHO microlensing candidates towards the LMC. Our main purpose is to determine the lens population to which the events may belong. We give particular emphasis to the possibility of characterising the Milky Way dark matter halo population with respect to the LMC one. Indeed, we show that only a fraction of the events have characteristics that match those expected for lenses belonging to the MACHO population of the Galactic halo. This suggests that this component cannot explain all the candidates. Accordingly, we challenge the view that the dark matter halo fraction of both the Galaxy and the LMC halos are equal, and indeed we show that, for a MACHO mass in the range 0.1–0.3 M , the LMC halo fraction can be significantly larger than the Milky Way’s. In this perspective, our main conclusion is that up to about half of the observed events could be attributed to the LMC MACHO dark matter halo.

On the Consistency between the Outer Rotation Curve of the Galaxy and the Microlensing Rate towards the Large Magellanic Cloud

Recent determination of the outer rotation curve of the Galaxy suggests that the total Galactic mass is likely to concentrate into a region of radius ∼ 2R0. If this finding is correct, the previously estimated optical depth of microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) should be correspondingly reduced. It appears that a truncated Galactic halo model instead of the standard is...

EROS2 microlensing search towards the Magellanic Clouds

eros2 is a second generation microlensing experiment operating since mid-1996 at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at La Silla (Chile). We present the two year analysis from our microlensing search towards the Small Magellanic Cloud (smc), and report on the intensive observation of the caustic crossing event macho-smc98-1 and the limit derived on the location of the lens. We also give pre...

Statistical Interpretation of LMC Microlensing Candidates

After a decade of gravitational microlensing experiments, a dozen of microlensing candidates in the direction of the stars of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been detected by the EROS and MACHO groups. Recently it was shown that the distribution of the duration of the observed LMC microlensing events is significantly narrower than what is expected from the standard halo model. In this art...

Not Enough Stellar Mass Machos in the Galactic Halo

We present an update of results from the search for microlensing towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (lmc) by eros (Expérience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres). We have now monitored 25 million stars over three years. Because of the small number of observed microlensing candidates (four), our results are best presented as upper limits on the amount of dark compact objects in the halo of our Galaxy...

Spectroscopy of MACHO 97-SMC-1: self-lensing within the SMC

More than a dozen microlensing events have been detected so far towards the LMC and 2 towards the SMC. If all the lenses are in the Galactic halo, both the LMC and the SMC events are expected to have similar time scales. However, the first event towards the SMC, MACHO 97-SMC-1, had a time scale of 123 days which is much larger than the typical time scale for the LMC events. Since the observed t...
